Stress Management For Young Adults

Young adulthood is an exciting, overwhelming experience for many people. You are navigating new waters and taking on new responsibilities. You may be planning on going to college, maybe getting your own place outside of your family home, or starting a full-time career. Nevertheless, this period of life can be quite confusing and challenging. As you begin to make more decisions for yourself and manage your own schedule, you may find yourself stressed and anxious. These feelings are common for those experiencing new life circumstances. It is important that you find coping mechanisms and techniques to help you address and manage stressful situations whenever they may arise.

There are many pressures added to your life when you reach adulthood, so it is no surprise that so many young adults struggle with their mental and emotional health. It is essential that you become aware of the many stress management techniques that are readily available for your use, so you avoid developing unhealthy habits. Engage In Self-Awareness 

Self-awareness extends off of mindfulness, and defines the ability to identify your internal thoughts and sensations as well as your outward reactions to events. To be able to change a situation, you have to first be able to identify the issue at hand. If you are in an environment and begin to feel uncomfortable, you must be able to acknowledge the uncomfortable feelings to act on changing the environment you are in. 

You may be someone that would rather ignore how you are feeling instead of putting in time and effort to identify where your distressing emotions are coming from. Although you may have a busy schedule, you should never try to avoid your emotions. If you do so, your emotions will continue to build up over time and control you from a deeper, subconscious level. Open up to yourself and close family or friends by sharing authentic conversation about mental wellness. You are never alone in how you are feeling. It often brings about feelings of peace and comfort knowing that others struggle with their mental health, too. 

From the opposite perspective, many young adults feed into their emotions so much that they are unable to identify the cause of their emotions. Emotionally-charged reactions often develop from deep childhood trauma or other subconscious factors. There is a lot that you can do without the help of a therapist, such as making notes when you begin to feel overwhelmed and trying to identify the cause. Here are a few suggestions of mindfulness techniques to consider adding to your routine:

  • Participate in guided meditations on youtube
  • Focus on your breathing in stressful situations
  • Read a self-help book
  • Take a nature walk
  • Focus on gratitude
  • Engage in exercise

Clean Your Space

Another stress management tip for young adults would be to clean or clear out your space. Life becomes a bit more comforting when you know where all of your belongings are and you have a clean living space. If you do not consider yourself a tidy person, dedicate one day a week to put everything back into its place. Organize your space in a way that makes sense to you. Cleaning your space also entails letting things go that you may no longer use or need. 

Prioritize Self-Care

Self-care is not selfish, if anything, you are taking conscious effort to appreciate your body. Self-care includes awareness and mindfulness, but extends also to your diet, sleep patterns, and how you go about your relationships. You want to make sure you are fueling your body with good, healthy foods that give you energy throughout your day. This includes keeping your body very hydrated! Sleep patterns can affect how susceptible you are to stressful events. Make sure you are keeping to a sleep routine or sleep pattern. 

Utilize Your Resources

There are a variety of resources available to help you during your transition to, or during young adulthood. Take advantage of these resources. There are bank clerks to help you understand your finances, mental health centers to guide your mental wellness, and academic advisors to help further your education. The list only continues, as other resources can help you locate places to live, places to apply for a job, or even help with childcare. The epitome of stress is thinking that you have to do everything yourself, although this is not true. You may be shocked how things change for the better when you begin to take advantage of community support resources!
