ThIngs to Celebrate in March

March is finally here, the time in the year where the temperatures are completely random, meaning you’ll have to bundle up and slog through half a foot of snow one day then get ready to sweat all through the next day. It’s the time of year when you need light layers because you’ll freeze going to work in the morning and be ready for short sleeves by lunch.

You may look outside your window to see everything is glazed over in a thin layer of ice even though it’s supposed to be spring. One day it feels like warm spring air is around the corner, and the next, the weather forecast announces six inches of snow daily for the next three days.

By this time of the winter, you probably can’t stand the sight of your snow boots. You know you are one day closer to campfires, hiking trips, fishing adventures, and berry picking madness with each passing sunset, so close and yet just out of reach.

Things to Celebrate in March

March is the month that reminds you the snow is leaving, blooms will soon be blooming, and you will see your beloved sandals once again…but not quite yet. There are many things to celebrate during March besides the return of spring.

March 1st: National Peanut Butter Lovers Day. If you love everything peanut butter, this is the day that you have been waiting for. Peanut butter is much more than a sandwich spread. It can be enjoyed as a complement to any number of foods and has health benefits along with being delicious.

Did you know that one tablespoon of peanut butter has the potential to fight the free radicals that cause cancer and heart disease? Peanut butter also promotes strong bones and lowers the risk of diabetes. This day might even be your chance to try your hand at making your own nut butter.

March 2nd: Read Across America Day and Dr. Suess Day. Gather your friends, family, and children of all ages because March 2nd is Dr. Suess’ birthday, a day to celebrate reading. Check with your local libraries and bookstores for any events, or simply make yourself a plate of green eggs and ham, then settle down with something on your to-be-read list.

March 5th: Employee Appreciation Day and National Unplugging Day. COVID-19 has made jobs in retail, medical, mental health, and social work fields feel like the last two years can be measured in dog years. It’s easy to overlook giving employees the proper appreciation they deserve because they’re “just doing their job.” If you happen to be anywhere and utilize any service, let the employee know you appreciate them.

National Unplugging Day is a day to take a full twenty-four-hour break from all things electronic. We live in a world where technology has seeped into all aspects of our livelihoods and an hour without any form of technology can seem impossible. Observe this day by unplugging and doing an outdoor activity, spending screen-free time with friends, or doing something analog.

March 8th: International Women’s Day. Today is the day that celebrates women, their resilience under pressure, their bravery, and their accomplishments. Research important historical women, or simply do something caring for an important woman in your life.

March 12th: Plant a Flower Day. Though there’s still the potential for a cold snap, March 12th is a great day to plant indoor seedlings to grow strong for when outdoor gardens are viable.

March 17th: St. Patrick’s Day. Break out your green attire and celebrate all things Irish. If pub crawls, clogging, and sea shanties aren’t your thing, consider honoring this day by looking up the history of how it came to be.

March 20th: Equinox Day. This is also known as the first day of spring when you can take comfort in the fact that spring is around the corner. Appreciate the balance of having equal daylight and nighttime hours.

March 30th: Take a Walk in the Park Day. Spring can be a time of renewal and recharging. A walk in a park can calm anxiety and promote an overall feeling of wellness. When taking a walk, give yourself time to notice the birds, the newly budding leaves, and the early blossoms that will be along your path. Not sure where to find a park in your area? Go exploring, drive around, give yourself the gift of discovering new places. If driving around isn’t for you, you can google locations of the city, county, and state parks near you. Have fun, be safe, enjoy connecting with your environment.

There are many things to celebrate in March. However, finding things to celebrate can be difficult when you experience anxiety or depression. Issues with mental health can prevent you from seeing the simple joys in your day-to-day activities. Winter can make getting out of your home and connecting with anything but your electronic screens seem like too much effort.
