What Is Depression?

Depression is a mood disorder that can impact men, women, and children. It causes emotional symptoms like feelings of sadness and emptiness, agitation, and irritability. At the same time, depression can result in physical symptoms like fatigue, weight loss or gain, and sleep disturbances.

Some people experience depression only once in their lives. Yet, many people experience ongoing depressive episodes that occur at various times. If depression symptoms impact the ability to perform day-to-day activities, consult with a doctor. Or, if depression symptoms trigger thoughts of death or suicide, call 911 immediately.

How Are The Symptoms Of Depression Treated?

There are many types of treatments for depression, including postpartum depression treatment, bipolar depression treatment, and magnetic treatment for depression. The ideal treatment, however, depends on the patient, their type of depression, and other factors.

Medication is one of the most common treatments for depression symptoms. A doctor may prescribe any of the following types of medication to help a patient manage depression symptoms: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), atypical antidepressants, tricyclic antidepressants, and/or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Psychotherapy, commonly referred to as talk therapy, may be used in combination with depression medication, or in lieu of medication for depression symptoms. With psychotherapy, a patient identifies negative beliefs and behaviors that contribute to their bout with depression. Then, this patient can explore strategies and techniques to help move past these beliefs and behaviors.

Alternative depression treatments like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy may be used in combination with medication and/or psychotherapy as well. TMS is used to help patients dealing with treatment-resistant depression. The therapy involves the use of magnetic pulses to stimulate neurons in the brain that otherwise can contribute to depression symptoms.

What Is The Best Treatment For Depression Symptoms?

There is no one-size-fits-all depression treatment that works well for patients of all ages. Instead, a patient may require one or more treatments to help manage depression symptoms.

If people find a traditional treatment for depression symptoms — such as medication or psychotherapy — is ineffective, alternatives are available. By working with the medical clinicians at Achieve Medical Center, patients can explore all of the depression treatment options at their disposal.

At Achieve Medical Center, we treat the patient — not their depression symptoms. To accomplish our goal, our medical clinicians learn about the patient and explore ways to help the patient achieve long-term relief from their depression symptoms.

Since each patient is unique, we provide a custom depression treatment plan. We also monitor the treatment plan’s effectiveness and modify it as needed to ensure the best results possible.
