What is Psychotherapy?
How Does Psychotherapy Work?
Who Does Psychotherapy Help?
Psychotherapy is effective for individuals, families and couples with various emotional, behavioral or mental health problems. It helps patients change maladaptive thinking and can be used for short-term problems like grief, stress, or anger, or it can address deeper issues such as mental illness, addiction or self-harming with a more long-term approach. Because treatment sessions are tailored to each individual's goals, needs, and concerns, it can benefit anyone who wants to work through their issues and develop new coping strategies for future challenges. Some concerns commonly addressed with psychotherapy include:
- Mental illness (depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, etc.)
- Substance abuse
- Process addictions
- Trauma
- Grief
- Relationship problems
- Poor communication skills
- Anger management
- Eating disorders
- Conflict resolution
Psychotherapy can also help individuals better understand and cope with significant life events, including divorce, job loss or a serious medical diagnosis. In many cases, psychotherapy has shown to be as effective as medication in helping individuals manage these and other problems, but it can be combined with a pharmacological approach to ease the symptoms of mental illness. While it might feel emotionally uncomfortable to explore painful experiences and open up about deep-seated issues, psychotherapy can be included as part of a comprehensive treatment plan with few risks or side effects, making it ideal for anyone who wants to improve their mental and emotional well-being.

Individual Therapy
Individual therapy is a collaborative therapeutic process between a trained and experienced clinician and an individual patient. At Achieve Medical Center, we offer a broad range of individual therapeutic services to meet the needs of various patients. Some of the options we provide include art therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, grief therapy, insight-oriented therapy, interpersonal therapy, play therapy, supportive therapy, and much more. The therapist may employ techniques from different therapy types, depending on the situation at hand. Individual sessions are available in 55 or 85-minute blocks.
Play Therapy
Play therapy is a technique whereby the child’s natural means of expression, namely play, is used as a therapeutic method to assist him or her in coping with emotional stress or trauma. Play therapy is generally employed with children aged 3 through 11. Through this method, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behaviors, develop problem-solving skills, and relate to others in a variety of healthy ways.
Group Therapy
Group therapy is a great way to deal with issues in a more positive and supportive setting. Here, patients can feel less isolated in the world, knowing that there are others who feel the same as they do. Sessions are moderated and led by a highly trained professional to ensure a therapeutic and productive experience. Groups are put together with the intent to provide safe and respectful environments that help patients learn, heal, and build connections with other individuals facing similar struggles. One of the most important tenets of group therapy is confidentiality that is mutually understood and explained to all clients and staff.
Couples Therapy
The goal of couples therapy is to improve the communication between partners and learn effective problem resolution. Through effective couples counseling, partners can resolve past issues, increase and improve their communication with one another, stop fighting about the same issues over and over again, improve sexual intimacy, agree on parenting techniques and feel more respected in the relationship. An experienced Achieve Medical Center clinician acts as a mediator, provides objective feedback and helps create a safe environment for couples to learn how to resolve conflicts in a healthy manner. Couples therapy can be beneficial to couples of all types, whether married or unmarried, heterosexual or homosexual. Short-term counseling may last for three to five sessions, whereas long-term couples therapy may be between 12 and 24 sessions.
