The ultimate goal of all our therapies are to make enduring changes in a person’s life in order to enable them to live a more fulfilling life.
What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy, often referred to as talk therapy, is used to help individuals with emotional or mental health difficulties. As a core element of many treatment plans, psychotherapy is a proven technique that’s often used in conjunction with medication, crisis planning and other therapies to provide a well-rounded approach for managing the symptoms of mental illness.
Although the basic idea behind psychotherapy remains the same, the approach, duration and frequency of treatment can vary depending on the patient and provider. Psychotherapy sessions can take place in an individual, family or group setting and may include both children and adults. Throughout the treatment process, discussions are kept private and protected by confidentiality laws, so patients can feel comfortable sharing their personal thoughts, feelings and experiences in an open and honest way.
How Does Psychotherapy Work?
Psychotherapy works by giving individuals the opportunity to discuss their mental health problems in a safe and supportive space. Doing so can help them understand their symptoms in a new light and develop the coping skills they’ll need to overcome their challenges. Through psychotherapy, patients also improve their emotional awareness and gain insights that can change harmful attitudes or behaviors, allowing them to live a healthier and more fulfilling life.
Psychotherapy is similar to counseling but digs deeper to address the source of a patient’s problems and introduce new strategies for solving them. It is a dynamic process that requires openness, honesty and a desire to change, with the power to transform an individual’s thinking and inspire meaningful personal growth that lasts.
Who Does Psychotherapy Help?
Psychotherapy is effective for individuals, families and couples with various emotional, behavioral or mental health problems. It helps patients change maladaptive thinking and can be used for short-term problems like grief, stress, or anger, or it can address deeper issues such as mental illness, addiction or self-harming with a more long-term approach. Because treatment sessions are tailored to each individual's goals, needs, and concerns, it can benefit anyone who wants to work through their issues and develop new coping strategies for future challenges. Some concerns commonly addressed with psychotherapy include:
- Mental illness (depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, etc.)
- Substance abuse
- Process addictions
- Relationship problems
- Poor communication skills
- Anger management
- Eating disorders
- Conflict resolution
Psychotherapy can also help individuals better understand and cope with significant life events, including divorce, job loss or a serious medical diagnosis. In many cases, psychotherapy has shown to be as effective as medication in helping individuals manage these and other problems, but it can be combined with a pharmacological approach to ease the symptoms of mental illness. While it might feel emotionally uncomfortable to explore painful experiences and open up about deep-seated issues, psychotherapy can be included as part of a comprehensive treatment plan with few risks or side effects, making it ideal for anyone who wants to improve their mental and emotional well-being.

Individual therapy is a collaborative therapeutic process between a trained and experienced clinician and an individual patient. At Achieve Medical Center, we offer a broad range of individual therapeutic services to meet the needs of various patients. Some of the options we provide include art therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, grief therapy, insight-oriented therapy, interpersonal therapy, play therapy, supportive therapy, and much more. The therapist may employ techniques from different therapy types, depending on the situation at hand. Individual sessions are available in 55 or 85-minute blocks.
Play therapy is a technique whereby the child’s natural means of expression, namely play, is used as a therapeutic method to assist him or her in coping with emotional stress or trauma. Play therapy is generally employed with children aged 3 through 11. Through this method, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behaviors, develop problem-solving skills, and relate to others in a variety of healthy ways.
Group therapy is a great way to deal with issues in a more positive and supportive setting. Here, patients can feel less isolated in the world, knowing that there are others who feel the same as they do. Sessions are moderated and led by a highly trained professional to ensure a therapeutic and productive experience. Groups are put together with the intent to provide safe and respectful environments that help patients learn, heal, and build connections with other individuals facing similar struggles. One of the most important tenets of group therapy is confidentiality that is mutually understood and explained to all clients and staff.
The goal of couples therapy is to improve the communication between partners and learn effective problem resolution. Through effective couples counseling, partners can resolve past issues, increase and improve their communication with one another, stop fighting about the same issues over and over again, improve sexual intimacy, agree on parenting techniques and feel more respected in the relationship. An experienced Achieve Medical Center clinician acts as a mediator, provides objective feedback and helps create a safe environment for couples to learn how to resolve conflicts in a healthy manner. Couples therapy can be beneficial to couples of all types, whether married or unmarried, heterosexual or homosexual. Short-term counseling may last for three to five sessions, whereas long-term couples therapy may be between 12 and 24 sessions.
Getting the Most out of Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a collaborative process that relies on the mutual trust and cooperation of patients and providers. People seek therapy for a number of reasons, but it can be difficult to know where to start, especially if it’s their first time speaking to a licensed clinician. Fortunately, there a few things patients can do to get the most of out their psychotherapy sessions and ensure a productive experience, such as:
- Thinking about specific treatment goals and issues to address
- Making sure to find a therapist that’s the right fit
- Setting regular appointments and prioritizing mental wellness
- Being open and honest during treatment sessions
- Keeping a therapy journal to track progress, summarize insights and take notes
- Practicing the techniques and coping skills that have been learned
Although it may take a while to notice positive changes, following these guidelines can help individuals maximize their time spent in psychotherapy and take advantage of the benefits it provides. Achieve Medical Center’s experienced clinicians will also work closely with patients to ensure that therapy sessions are constructive and rewarding.
