What Is Zulresso (Brexanalone)?

Zulresso (Brexanalone) is a novel IV (intravenous) treatment approved by the FDA for the treatment of postpartum depression in adult women. PPD is a major depressive episode that most often occurs following childbirth, though can sometimes start during pregnancy, characterized by sadness, loss of interest in usual activities, and difficulty finding pleasure in life or forming emotional connections with others.

How Does Zulresso (Brexanalone) Work?

Brexanalone is an endogenous neurosteroid, naturally produced by the human body, that works through the GABA receptor pathway. It’s exact mechanism of action is unclear, though it bears many similarities to other neurochemicals of known function and mechanisms of action.

How Is It Administered?

Patients and providers seeking to use Zulresso are enrolled in a regulatory program called REMS. Zulresso is administered as an IV infusion over a total of 60 hours, during which time the patient remains in the clinical site and is closely monitored for safety. Family is welcome to make scheduled visits during this time.
